Jugular venous Pulse/Pressure ( part 1)

Jugular venous Pulse/Pressure ( part 1)

I drew only right side of heart in that pic.
What is JVP?

JVP denotes both jugular venous pulse and pressure.
Pulse: wave seen by our eyes. Donot feel the venous pulse .its important to remember that arterial pulse are felt and venous pulse are seen.

Pressure : measured by mono meter. But here we dont use any monometer. Vertical length of blood coloumn present in IJV above Angle of louis. We use 3 scales to measure height of pulse ( = pressure)

What is normal JVP?
As you see in this pic the normal vertical length between right atrium and IJV is 8cm H2O. From right atrium to angle of louis it is 5cm H2O. So as per definition the vertical length b/w angle of louis and IJV is the remaining 3cm H2O.
Greater than 4cm H2O is considered as elevated JVP.

Why do we prefer IJV not external jugular vein?
Because IJV is directly(less oblique) connected with right atrium. EJV is more oblique and it is tortuous(kinking).
IJV is devoid of valves so the pressure in right atrium is reflected(back pressure) in it. IJV - Biological monometer of right atrium.
